Bud not Buddy book review

  • I have to admit I think my favorite part of the story Bud, Not Buddy would have to of been when the band gives Bud the saxophone they had bought at a pawn shop.In the text it says "I started pulling newspapers off and could tell that their gift was real heavy. All of a sudden a shiny piece of gold showed through. I snatched more paper off and couldn't believe my eyes! The Dusky Devastators of the Depression had put their money together had had bought me a baby-size horn like Steady Eddie's saxophone!"I say this is my favorite part because I can literally picture the moment where Bud gets to see this little spot of gold and then his eyes would light up and be so happy about someone actually getting him a "present" since he was around 6.I also say this is my favorite part because the band has really warmed up to Bud and they are treating him with more respect even if in the beginning they didn't like Bud as much.
  • I think my least favorite part about the story is how Bud never meets up with Bugs again after the train incident where Bud didn't make it on the train. In the text it says "The train and my new pretend brother got farther and farther away, chugging to Chicago. Man, I'd found some family and he was gone before we could really get to know each other."I say this is my least favorite part because in the end of the book they don't even tie up the loose ends of how Bud may have seen Bugs again or if they never cross paths again or if they do cross paths.I also say this is my least favorite part because I wish Bugs would have done some act or something really special so Bud would remember it even though he may never see Bugs again. The last reason I don't like this part is because I think it would have been better off if Bugs nor Bud made it then Bud left Bugs with a final goodbye at the cardboard city or at least met up again while Bud was on his way to Grand Rapids.
  • What I would add to the ending of Bud not Buddy would be to tie up all of the loose ends that the author left us hanging with. One thing I would put in the ending is how Bud and Bugs meet up again while Bugs was now in the care of a better family rather than living in the home again.I would also add how Bud also met up with Lefty Lewis and how they caught up and how Bud would tell him the whole story from start to finish. Then I would say how Bud figures out who is father is because Bud had become pretty famous for being a young saxophone player in the band Herman E. Calloway and the Dusty Devastators of the Depression. Also Bud meets up with Deza Malone and they get married. While Bugs lives near by with his family.I would also add how Bud has a very sucessful career and dies happily and never has to re-live the days of him having to lie just to get food. The last and final part that I would add would be for Bud to turn Herman E. Calloway into a nicer person rather than the old man that Bud had come to known but deep down I think Bud loved his grandfather more than anyone in the entire world.

  • I highly recommend this book (Bud,Not Buddy).I say this because it gives a fictional twist but still has some facts about the great depression.I also love how the author keeps the facts and fiction into the story while still not making it a boring non-fiction factual book. The last reason I highly recommend this book is because I think it gives the perfect amount of fun and excitement while still keeping the facts and setting of the Great Depression.
